  UPFRONT BRIEFING

Servier paid $1.55B upfront in June for sevasemten, and on Tuesday the Becker pivotal missed every endpoint before a single milestone came due. Novo raised its 2026 outlook for a third time on a Wegovy pill that beat forecasts by about 17%, and Pfizer lifted both revenue and EPS guidance as Eliquis, Padcev and Nurtec outran the Covid decline.

SITC opens today in Phoenix, with AASLD (from Thursday) and AHA (from Friday) close behind, so the data flow shifts from earnings calls to posters. Washington is back in the frame too: overnight projections pointed to a Democratic House, and Bourla says Pfizer's MFN deal won't change.

TAPE ACTION

  • Biotech outran healthcare: XBI 1.9%, BBC 2.5% and NBI 0.8% against XLV (0.3%) and the S&P 500's 0.4%. Single names moved hard: Neurocrine closed up about 13% after its Q3, and Madrigal traded about 14% higher premarket on Rezdiffra's quarter.

  • Chip stocks pulled the S&P 500 out of a three-day losing streak and the Nasdaq 100 up 0.7%: AMD and Broadcom gained about 3%, Micron and Nvidia more than 2%. Apple fell 1.9% on a soft holiday-quarter margin guide and dragged the Dow (0.4%). Brent settled 1.1% lower at $103.60 on reports of progress toward a US-Iran deal, September JOLTS showed openings rising, and the 10-year sat near 4.91% as midterm voting got under way.

THE BIG 3

1️⃣ — Servier's sevasemten fails pivotal Becker MD trial

  • Servier's sevasemten (oral fast skeletal myosin inhibitor, bought from Edgewise for $1.55B upfront plus up to $1.1B in milestones) missed the North Star Ambulatory Assessment primary endpoint and all secondaries in the 18-month, 175-patient GRAND CANYON Becker trial. Safety was favourable, and Servier is re-analysing the dataset (release Tue 13:00 GMT).

  • Why it matters: Servier paid $1.55B in cash in June and closed on 13 July, so it carried the binary risk for less than four months. GRAND CANYON ran 18 months in 175 adults on the North Star Ambulatory Assessment, the endpoint FDA pointed Edgewise to in June 2025 when it refused an accelerated filing on Phase 2 CANYON. That Phase 2 won on creatine kinase, but its NSAA gap was not significant (p=0.16), so the pivotal miss repeats the warning in the earlier data. Edgewise keeps the cash and loses only up to $1.1B of milestones that now look remote. Servier has not said whether the Phase 2 Duchenne work continues, and Becker still has no approved therapy.

2️⃣ — Novo lifts its 2026 outlook a third time as the Wegovy pill beats

  • Novo Nordisk raised its 2026 outlook for adjusted sales and adjusted operating profit growth to -2% to +2% at CER, from a 0% to 6% decline. Q3 adjusted sales were DKK79.2B vs DKK73.2B expected, and adjusted operating profit was DKK31.7B vs DKK28.4B (release Wed 01:30 ET).

  • Why it matters: Wegovy pill sales of DKK5.39B (~$810M) beat the DKK4.62B consensus, rose 53% on Q2 and came from about 3.6M US prescriptions in the quarter. US injectable Wegovy fell 13% at CER, so part of the pill's growth is switching, though combined US Wegovy still grew 21%. Q3 also booked a DKK4.6B ziltivekimab impairment after the ZEUS cardiovascular Phase 3 failed in July, and CEO Mike Doustdar told Fierce Novo is still hunting deals to close some of the gaps. The 27% CER jump in adjusted operating profit is flattered by DKK9B of transformation costs in Q3 2025. Lilly raised its outlook last week and Foundayo is taking a growing share of new oral prescriptions, so Q4 becomes a pill-share fight.

3️⃣ — Pfizer lifts 2026 guidance as oncology, migraine offset Covid

  • Pfizer raised 2026 revenue guidance to $62.0–64.0B (from $60.5–62.5B) and adjusted EPS to $2.95–3.05 (from $2.80–3.00). Q3 revenue was $16.58B, flat operationally and up 7% excluding Comirnaty and Paxlovid; adjusted EPS was $0.87 (Tue pre-open).

  • Why it matters: The growth is coming from the right lines: Eliquis $2.52B (+25% operational), Padcev $720M (+55%), Nurtec $547M (+33%) and oncology $4.33B (+10%), against Comirnaty at $808M (down 30%) and Paxlovid at $449M (down 63%). Prevnar fell 10% to $1.56B, the soft spot in vaccines. The quarter booked a $3.8B impairment on sigvotatug vedotin after its Phase 3 lung cancer miss, and Pfizer also axed a Phase 2 BMP9-targeted pulmonary arterial hypertension programme and trimmed its obesity pipeline. The EPS range moves up 10 cents at the midpoint while Covid keeps shrinking, which is the mix change the stock has waited for. Shares still slipped about 0.2% early.
